Catholic CCD Classes

What Are CCD Classes?

CCD stands for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and refers to religious education classes that teach Catholic children the essential truths of the Faith. CCD classes prepare students for their Sacraments, help them learn prayer and doctrine, and are typically taken weekly at parishes or through approved online programs like CatechismClass.com.

Catechism classes—also called CCD classes, PREP classes, or catechesis—are a fundamental part of Catholic faith formation for children. Whether your child attends public school or is homeschooled, CCD programs help ensure they understand their Catholic faith and are prepared for Confirmation, First Communion, and a lifetime of spiritual growth.

✓ Key Point: CCD classes are essential preparation for your child's spiritual journey. Through structured Catholic education, children develop a foundation in faith that lasts a lifetime.

What is Catechism?

The term catechism refers to the body of Catholic doctrine that comprises the Faith that Catholics believe. The Catechism is a comprehensive manual of instruction in Christian doctrine—it codifies all of the Church's essential teachings into one unified source.

Catechism includes the foundational beliefs of Catholicism: the Creed, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, prayer, and how to live as a faithful Catholic. The most well-known modern catechism is the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was published in 1992.

Definition of Catechism

Father John Hardon, in his Catholic Dictionary, defines catechism as: "A popular manual of instruction in Christian doctrine. In the early Church, catechetical instruction was standardized in preparation for baptism as in the writings of St. Augustine (354-430) and St. Gregory of Nyssa (330-95). After the invention of printing, books of catechetical instruction multiplied."

History of Catechisms

The first catechism ever created was written by St. Peter Canisius in 1555. His Summa Doctrinae Christianae (Summary of Christian Doctrine) was an incredibly complete work in multiple volumes meant for clergy and laymen. He later produced the Catechismus Minor (Smaller Catechism), followed by the Parvus Catechismus Catholicorum (Small Catechism for Catholics), which is now back in print.

Other influential catechisms in the Catholic tradition include:

All authentic Catholic catechisms teach the same universal truths of the Faith, though they may present doctrine in different ways. At CatechismClass.com, we incorporate several different catechisms in our lessons to help students understand topics from multiple perspectives and develop a deeper comprehension of Catholic doctrine.

What is Catechesis?

Catechesis refers to the process of giving religious education—the actual teaching of Catholic doctrine to children, young people, and adults. Pope John Paul II defined catechesis as: "An education in the faith of children, young people and adults which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted, generally speaking, in an organic and systematic way."

In other words, catechism is the what (the body of doctrine), while catechesis is the how (the teaching process). CCD classes are catechesis—they teach the catechism.

Who Teaches CCD? What is a Catechist?

A catechist is a person who teaches religion and Catholic doctrine. In parishes, catechists might be certified religious educators, trained volunteers, or parish coordinators. As a parent, you are also a catechist—the primary catechist in your child's faith formation.

Catechists have a solemn responsibility to teach the authentic Catholic Faith, help students prepare for their Sacraments, and guide them toward a deeper spiritual life. At CatechismClass.com, we support both professional catechists and parent-educators with comprehensive, faithful, and engaging courses.

When Do Children Start CCD Classes?

CCD classes typically begin around first or second grade and continue through eighth or tenth grade, depending on your diocese. The exact timeline varies by region, but the general pattern is:

  1. Ages 6-7 (1st Grade): Introduction to Catholic basics, prayers, and the Sacraments
  2. Ages 7-10 (2nd-5th Grade): Foundation in Catholic doctrine, preparation for First Communion
  3. Ages 10-14 (6th-8th Grade): Deeper study of faith, preparation for Confirmation
  4. Ages 15+ (High School): Advanced catechesis, spiritual formation, vocational discernment

💡 Important: Some dioceses now offer Confirmation as early as 2nd grade, following the ancient practice of the Church. Confirm the timeline with your parish or diocese.

How Long Are CCD Classes?

Traditional parish CCD classes meet once per week, typically for one hour. The program usually runs during the school year (September through May or June). Total completion time depends on your child's age and the specific program.

With CatechismClass.com's online CCD program, families can work at their own pace. Many families complete courses in a few months by dedicating 30 minutes to an hour per week. Others spread lessons across the entire school year. You control the pace while maintaining a comprehensive, faithful formation.

Sacramental Preparation

A primary purpose of CCD classes is to prepare children for the Sacraments. Depending on your child's grade level and diocese, they may be preparing for:

  1. First Communion (typically 2nd grade)
  2. Confirmation (varies from 2nd to 10th grade)
  3. Reconciliation (Confession) (typically 1st-2nd grade)

Each of these Sacraments requires specific preparation. Learn more about our Sacramental Preparation programs →

What Do Children Learn in CCD?

CCD classes teach the essential truths of Catholic faith, including:

  1. The Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed
  2. The nature of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit
  3. The Sacraments and their spiritual importance
  4. Prayer and Mass devotions
  5. The Ten Commandments and morality
  6. Saints and their examples of faith
  7. Scripture and biblical stories
  8. Catholic traditions and practices

Modern CCD: Online Faith Formation

Traditional CCD programs met once a week in person at parishes. Today, families and parishes use online CCD programs to provide the same solid Catholic formation—faithful to Church teaching, accessible anywhere, and approved by many dioceses worldwide.
