Online Confirmation Sponsor Class
CatechismClass.com is pleased to have the support of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and offers its programs in full conformity with the Magisterium of the Church.
Should I Be A Confirmation Sponsor?
To be a Confirmation sponsor is both an honor and a responsibility. For this reason, you must be adequately prepared. While most formation courses are geared to prepare students for the grace-filled opportunity and responsibility that comes with receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, few programs also prepare Confirmation sponsors for the awesome responsibility of serving as a Confirmation sponsor. Just as being a godparent is both an honor and a responsibility, so too serving as a Confirmation sponsor requires preparation.
Can I Be A Confirmation Sponsor?
To be a sponsor, you must be a confirmed and practicing Catholic. You also must be committed to the Church's teachings and participate in the life of the Church (i.e. going to Mass weekly, going to Confession often, praying daily, upholding the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death, and all other duties that a Catholic must observe). You also generally must take a Confirmation Sponsor Class.
What are Confirmation Sponsor Requirements?
A Catholic Confirmation sponsor plays an important role in the spiritual life of the person being confirmed. The sponsor's responsibilities include guiding the confirmand (the person being confirmed) in their faith and serving as a role model for living a Christian life. The requirements for being a Confirmation sponsor in the Catholic Church are as follows:
1. Must be a Confirmed Catholic: The sponsor must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation themselves and be living according to the teachings of the Church.
2. Must Be a Practicing Catholic: The sponsor should regularly attend Mass, participate in the sacraments, and live a life in harmony with Catholic teachings.
3. Must Be At Least 16 Years Old: Generally, the sponsor should be at least 16 years of age. However, in some cases, a younger person who meets all other requirements might be considered.
4. Must Not Be a Parent of the Confirmand: While parents play a crucial role in the spiritual upbringing of their children, they are not permitted to be the sponsors for their own child's Confirmation.
5. Must Be in Good Standing with the Church: The sponsor should be in good standing, meaning they have not been excommunicated or placed under any canonical penalties. This means they must also believe and observe all Church teachings (e.g, regular Sunday Mass attendance, observance of all days of abstinence, committment to the sanctify of human life and only voting for candidates against abortion etc.)
5. Should Have a Personal Relationship with the Confirmand: It is encouraged that the sponsor knows the confirmand personally, to better guide and support them in their faith journey.
The sponsor's role is to provide spiritual support and guidance, both during the Confirmation process and throughout the confirmand's life.
