The following is from the Pastoral Directory on the Sacraments of Christian Initiation from the Archdiocese of Mexico:

✓ It is not mandatory to have a sponsor (godparent) for First Communion. If you want to keep the tradition of having a sponsor, the godparent would ideally be the same person from Baptism or Confirmation.
✓ Sponsors must take into account their catechetical preparation to support, accompany, and motivate their godchildren to participate with them in the reception of the Eucharist.
