Jesus is wearing the crown of thorns put onto His head by the Roman soldiers. To humiliate Him and make Him suffer even more, the soldiers made the crown of thorns. They were making fun of Him; because Jesus was a King, they made fun of Him by making the crown of thorns. The thorns were meant to hurt Him while they laughed and spit on poor suffering Jesus.

Even after all of this, Jesus still prayed to forgive the soldiers who put the crown of thorns on His holy head.

“And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews.”  Matthew 27:29
